Hunger author roxane7/4/2023 ![]() She has mastered the novel, the short story, the essay - even the Marvel comic. A graduate of Yale and a professor at Purdue, she’s been honing her craft for decades while experimenting with the best forms and forums for telling her stories. Although Gay’s story of being assaulted as a child and struggling with her body for years afterward will feel familiar to many women, her voice and style are unique. Hunger is the Parnassus First Editions Club pick for July, a thoughtful meditation on a woman’s body and its meaning to her comfort, pleasure, beauty, fear, and both mental and physical health. We could keep quoting from the new memoir by New York Times-bestselling author Roxane Gay, but we’d rather readers experience it themselves. In the cinematic chase that ensues, the action traverses the globe, from the Oval Office to the dusty trails of Afghanistan, each scene fleshed out in the smallest resonating detail (e.g., a Down syndrome child's laughter, the endless nausea of waterboarding). Exceptional second book A trilogy would be awesome. Soul-weary Scott Murdoch (aka the Pilgrim) has retired from the top echelon of ultrasecret espionage, but duty and faith in the human spirit call him back into service. Screenwriter and producer Hayes (Payback) makes his fiction debut with an exceptional thriller that boasts an utterly credible narrator who has had so many covert identities he can barely remember his original name. ![]() The anarchy east india company7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() In less than four decades it had trained up a security force of around 200,000 men-twice the size of the British army-and had subdued an entire subcontinent, conquering first Bengal and finally, in 1803, the Mughal capital of Delhi itself. But the creation of this new government marked the moment that the East India Company ceased to be a conventional international trading corporation dealing in silks and spices and became something much more unusual: an aggressive colonial power in the guise of a multinational business. The East India Company's founding charter authorized it to 'wage war' and it had always used violence to gain its ends. ![]() Summary: "In August 1756 the East India Company defeated the young Mughal emperor and forced him to establish in his richest provinces a new administration run by English merchants who collected taxes through means of a ruthless private army-what we would now call an act of involuntary privatization. ![]() Under the Lights by Dahlia Adler7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved.and the person she never imagined she could. The plot of I Found You is gripping and compelling but, as always with Lisa. With another writer, I would be trying to solve the mystery by chapter two, but Lisa's books are so deliciously immersive, like a warm scented bath, you don't want to jump ahead to find out what happened, preferring to lie back and let the story wash over you. Three separate strands, three very different characters with one dark mystery at its core. I thought nothing could top The Girls, then along came I Found You.
